Have you ever gotten a professional massage? It’s quite lovely. I get that some people do not like to be touched. Having a stranger rubbing you with her/his hands whilst you lay mostly naked under a blanket can be anxiety inducing…I guess. I, on the other hand, will take a nice rubbing on these aging muscles in any way I can get it.

To me, massage is a wonderful experience. I was giggling while getting a pedicure the other day because the bottom of my feet tickle when getting them scrubbed. I fully enjoy it and laughing is great for your health. Double bonus!.

Last March I signed up for a deal at my local Massage Envy. It included 13 months of coupons for add-on services during your visit and a monthly fee for monthly massages. I’m loving it. Yes, $70/month is a bit of a luxury, more so for some. But the benefits are tremendous to my overall health and well-being. Which I don’t think you can ever spent too much on. BUT my brother and I were talking about it one day and he laughed at me for spending that on a monthly massage. Now, I wouldn’t call my brother frugal at all compared to me but he did have a point. There is a massage parlor close to where we live that charges about half of what I’m paying. The atmosphere is quite different and after falling in love with my masseuse, Dorothy, I don’t know if I’d want to change. The main reason I joined last year is because I wanted to force myself to go monthly. Massages have always been one of those things that I wanted to do on a regular basis but it always “got away from me”. You know life happens! So I signed up for the yearly membership and I’ve been going once a month.

I highly recommend, if you have a partner, to give each other massages regularly. Take a class together. It’s a great date idea and learning something new is sexy!

Benefits of massage, from research the mayo clinic compiled, include:

  • Anxiety
  • Digestive disorders
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia related to stress
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Soft tissue strains or injuries
  • Sports injuries
  • Temporomandibular joint pain

Massage can also give us a feeling of connection and comfort. If you wear heels regularly (Bless your soul) try a nice stretch on a step in your house and then give yourself a self massage using one of you favorite lotions and tell me how good that feels. Heaven…especially after a couple of hours. Your shins and calves will sing with gratitude.

It might be painful at first so go easy. Massage shouldn’t hurt (in this case). The massages would give my athletes were meant to hurt at times because it was a technique to get swelling away from an injured area. For you, always be gentle. You will find spots that scream when you touch them. These are trigger points. Lean in! Hold you finger on the spot for 10-20 second, take slow deep breaths, and then rub them out. You’ll notice the tightness will dissipate. Always be gentle with yourself.

There are contraindications to massages. Some of these include:

  • Acute flare-up of inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis
